The Surprise Trilogy Disc 1 is the second release of the Nashville based saxophonist/woodwindist/composer. It is the first disc of a three-disc collection featuring all original jazz compositions from a wide range of jazz genres including hard-bop, New Orleans Brass Band, Soul Jazz, and modern. This disc features some of Nashville finest jazz musicians such as Jeff Coffin, Don Aliquo, Rod McGaha, Derek Phillips, Pat Bergeson, Charles Treadway, Jerry Navarro, and many others.
A slight departure from his funkier, more groove oriented first album, Jazzmanic, The Surprise Trilogy is a collection of tunes that Chris has written over the past several years that are within a more traditional jazz genre, but yet maintain a very modern and original sound. He pulls from several influences, such as Wayne Shorter, Stanley Turrentine, Jimmy Smith, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Thelonious Monk, Herbie Hancock, MMW, Miles Davis, and many many others, and tries to create songs with a good balance of compositional sophistication with showcasing the musicians’ improvisational talents as soloists or together as an ensemble.
The title track, Surprise, is a song that has been performed in several ensembles and bands that Chris has led or played with in his musical career, and as a result, has experienced different forms. So as the theme of the trilogy, there is a different version of Surprise as the first and last track of each of the three discs.
